Does Universal Studios Close When it Rains?
For Both Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood, the parks remain open when it rains. If it is a light shower, outdoor rides will remain open but if the rain begins to pick up and/or thunderstorms are on the horizon, outdoor rides will temporarily close. They will open back up when the weather is suitable to continue.
If you are visiting Universal Orlando, there's a very good chance that it is going to rain at some point during your visit. Florida is notorious for being sunny one minute, and then severe thunderstorms coming in the next.
If you are visiting Universal Studios Hollywood, you'll be pleased to know that thunderstorms are very rare. In fact, there's only a few thunderstorms that happen throughout the entire year.
Preparing for the Rain
For those visiting Universal Orlando, you should simply expect the rain. That way, when it does you'll already be prepared to deal with it and not have it affect your experience in a negative way.
We've made a checklist of items to have and do in case of the rain:
- Bring a Poncho
- Download the Universal Studios app
- Know what the indoor rides are, and ride these rides when it rains
- Watch a show inside
The reason that a poncho is better than an umbrella at a theme park is that it's very lightweight and can fit virtually anywhere when it is folded up. If you bring an umbrella, you may need to store it in lockers throughout your day. You can purchase ponchos on Amazon ahead of time, or at the park for $10.
The Universal Studios app is extremely handy as it provides live wait times, an interactive map of the park, allows you to pre-order food, and you can join the Virtual Line experience for rides.
