TIAA Bank Field: Grass or Turf? | Easily Explained

When it comes to the playing surface at TIAA Bank Field, there is often confusion about whether the field is made of real grass or artificial turf.

In this page, we will explain whether or not TIAA Bank Field has real grass, and if so, why they do, and how they do it.

Is TIAA Bank Field Grass or Turf?

The current playing surface at TIAA Bank Field is real grass, specifically Tifway 419 Bermuda grass.

The Jaguars are able to maintain this field year-round with a state-of-the-art irrigation and drainage system that allows the grass to thrive.

It also helps that this stadium is located in Florida, exposing the grass to plenty of sun and rain throughout the year.

In the few times of the year that the state experiences colder weather, the field is prepared for this as they are equipped with a heating system.

History of the Field

TIAA Bank Field, previously known as Alltel Stadium and Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, was built in 1995 and has been home to the Jacksonville Jaguars since their inaugural season in 1995.

The original playing surface at the stadium was natural grass, but the field was converted to an artificial playing surface in 2003.

The field would later be converted back to natural grass in 2010, and would keep this natural grass surface until today.

Jaguars Practice Facility

Although the Jaguars uses natural grass on their game field, they use the Matrix Helix synthetic turf system for their new practice facility.
