Ironically, the sod is grown by Graff’s Turf Farms in Fort Morgan.

This hasn't always been the case however, as from 2001-2015, Mile High Stadium had artificial turf on their field.

Why Did the Stadium Switch From Turf to Real Grass?

In recent years, Mile High had an emphasis on player safety as well as providing the best playing surfaces for all players.

This would help not only reduce the risk of injury, but help improve the performance of the players.

Zach Myra, the Director of Facilities would go on to say:

After completing extensive upgrades to the stadium in recent years, our focus now is providing the safest and best possible playing surface at Sports Authority Field at Mile High

Their plan would be more than just simply replacing turf for grass.

It would include a full renovation that included a foot into the ground, where they could also renovate:

  • Improved field warming systems
  • Soil/Sand mixture
  • Pipes
  • Drainage system

This would allow them to keep an excellent playing surface for all 12 months of the year, accounting for the different seasons that Colorado is exposed to.
