Does Gilette Stadium Have Real Grass? | Easily Explained

In this page, we will explain whether or not Gilette Stadium has real grass, and if so, why they do, and how they do it.

Does Gilette Stadium Have Real Grass?

Gilette Stadium does not use real grass on their field, but artificial turf. Specifically, they use FieldTurf CORE.

Gilette Stadium originally opened with a real grass playing surface, which lasted for four years (2002-2006).

However, after a rainstorm created a muddy field and contributed to a Patriots loss to the Jets in November of 2006, Gilette Stadium would transition to a turf field.

Transition to Turf Occurred During the Season

The most unique part of this transition is that it was done during the season, immediately after the game.

Typically the NFL only allows such changes to occur in the off-season, however, the field was in such bad shape that they agreed to waive the rule.

The transition to a synthetic field was completed within two weeks, as there were three shifts being worked by the crew members throughout the day.

The Patriots would then play and win on their new field against the previously 9-1 Bears.

Gilette Stadium's Grass Field 2002-2006

Gillette Stadium's real grass field was made up of a mixture of:

  • Kentucky bluegrass
  • Perennial ryegrass
  • Fine fescuet

This mixture was specifically chosen to withstand the colder & rainy weather, while still maintaining excellent playing conditions.

However the real grass would not hold up through the years, which was the reason why they would eventually transition to turf.

Robert Kraft Open to Switching to Natural Grass

Although Gilette Stadium currently has artificial turf, Patriots owner Robert Kraft has recently mentioned that he would be open to installing a natural grass surface.

This is primarily due to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as Boston was one of the cities selected.
